President Paul Kagame is the President of the Republic of Rwanda and one of Africa’s most influential leaders. In 1990, as Commander of the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF), he led the liberation struggle that ultimately ended the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The RPF stopped the genocide, saving countless lives and laying the foundation for rebuilding a nation devastated by one of the darkest chapters in human history.
Every year on 4 July, Rwanda commemorates Liberation Day, known as Kwibohora, celebrating not only the country’s liberation but also its continued commitment to unity, resilience, and national progress. Speaking to participants of the 16th Indangamirwa Itorero cohort during the Meet the President dialogue, he encouraged young people to value discipline and apply the lessons they receive throughout their lives.
“That is why coming here for this training, being part of this Itorero, and everything you have learned is meant to instill discipline in you. If you embrace it, it will take you far. If you disregard it or fail to apply it as you should, it may take you only so far before your progress comes to an end.”
His message reflects a broader belief that leadership begins with personal responsibility, respect for others, and a commitment to serving society.
President Kagame also encourages young people to embrace technology, entrepreneurship, and lifelong learning. He believes Rwanda’s next generation should become creators of solutions, innovators, and responsible leaders capable of competing on a global stage while remaining committed to their country’s development.
Technology as a Force for Good
President Kagame has consistently promoted science, technology, and innovation as drivers of Rwanda’s transformation. Under his leadership, Rwanda has invested heavily in digital infrastructure, e-government services, innovation hubs, and digital skills development.
Speaking about artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, President Kagame emphasized the importance of using innovation responsibly:
“Technology is supposed to be a force for good, and we have a responsibility to use it accordingly.”
The vision is to shape Rwanda’s ambition to become one of Africa’s leading knowledge based and innovation driven economies.
President Kagame’s vision extends beyond economic growth. His administration has prioritized peace and reconciliation, investment, healthcare, education, environmental sustainability, and women’s empowerment while encouraging citizens to participate actively in national development.
